Mötley Crüe: The Dirt

For a long time I have considered Mötley Crüe to be a bit overrated and I never liked their music as much as some other bands from the 80s (apart from a few of their biggest hits). Nevertheless, since they are one of the greatest bands in the history of rock'n'roll and the only thing I heard about their autobiography The Dirt was praise , I couldn‘t resist more. So I decided to search for an answer to a very simple question. Is this book really such a shocking an open confession as everybody says?

On well designed four hundred pages the reader gets to know all four members through their own writing in personalized chapters. You will read almost a diary-formed confessions of Nikki, Vince, Tommy and Mick who will guide you through their lives full of proper rock'n'roll debauchery which can only be attributed to an exclusive superstar. Sometimes there is a manager or a former member of the band (John Corabi) presenting his view so that they can get you confused even more. As a result you will have a rich mixture of stories from a few self-centered unreliable narrators who often contradict themselves. Many times the musicians get playful with each other by revealing some deeds which others had no idea about before the book got released. Let‘s add the excessive consumption of drugs and alcohol and the fun may begin. Nikki Sixx for examples shares a funny story of him desperately trying to find a band he could join:

He said he needed a bassist, but I had no instrument. So I walked into the West Music one afternoon with empty guitar case one of Rick‘s friends had loaned me. I asked for a work application and, when the guy turned around to find one, I stuck a guitar into my case. My heart was hammering through my shirt and I could hardly speak when he handed me the form.  As I examined it, I noticed that the price tag for the guitar was hanging out of the case. I told him I’d come back and drop off the application, and walked out as casually as I could, accidentally banging the conspicuous guitar case into the walls, doors, and drum sets as I left. I had my first guitar. I was ready to rock, so I headed straight for Rick’s basement.
“You need a bassist,” I told him. “I’m your man.”
“You need a bass guitar,” he sneered.
“Beautiful,” I replied as I threw the case on a table, opened it up, and pulled out my newest possession.
“That’s a guitar you fucking idiot.”
“I know,” I lied.”I’ll play bass on the guitar.”
“You can’t do that!”
So I bid farewell to my first guitar, sold it, using the money to buy a shiny black Rickenbacker bass with a white pick guard.

The fact that the book itself is dedicated to their “wives and children . In the hopes that someday they will forgive us for what we have done” sounds like a bad joke to me. The Dirt portrays an account of too many perversities and funny stories (although this had to depend on the point of view back then) associated with all kinds of narcotics, alcohol and obviously sex. Being a woman reading this book makes your eyebrows raise perpetually because of how disrespectful and offensive these guys were to women. Just to have an idea of what I am talking about, a few sentences from Vince from the very first chapter of the book where he describes the house the band lived in at the beginning of their career will illustrate the situation:

Girls would arrive in shifts. One would be climbing out the window while another was coming in the door. Me and Tommy had our own window, and Nikki had his. All we‘d have to say is, “Somebody‘s here. You have to go.” And they‘d go – although sometimes they’d only go as far as the room across the hall.

One can almost hardly believe that such a decadent lifestyle could ever be real. The Dirt offers a fascinating glimpse into a life that is miles away from the one most of us can even imagine. To this day I can‘t quite figure out how they ever had time for music with all the distractions in their lives. However it’s sill nice that Mötley Crüe don’t claim to be angels and sincerely admit doing some seriously disgusting things. In their own words, the absolute peak of all the wildness occurred during the Bark at the Moon tour with Ozzy Osbourne in 1984:

We thought we were the baddest creatures on God‘s great earth. Nobody could do it as us and as much as us, and get away with it like us. There was no competition. The more fucked up we got, the greater people thought we were and the more they supplied us with what we needed to get even more fucked up. Radio stations brought us groupies, management gave us drugs. Everyone we met made sure we were constantly fucked and fucked up. We thought nothing about whipping out our dicks and urinating on the floor of a radio station during an interview or fucking the host on-air if she was halfway decent looking. We thought we had elevated animal behaviour to an art form. But then we met Ozzy…

So that you don‘t think that I am judging the book unfairly, there are still many chastening and moving moments featured because karma waited for all the four members of Mötley Crüe and they paid dearly for their foolishness. You will learn all about the media blown up car accident of Razzle from Hanoi Rocks, Mick Mars‘s health issues, Vince’s family tragedy (by the way this was one of the most moving chapters I have ever read) and about all the desperate things these guys craving for fame while led by uncontrolled addictions  did. In the 90s this resulted in the band members falling out with each other constantly and ending up in rehabs with minimal help from their record label which just had them bled dry.

The way the memoir is composed makes the story gripping and sincere which made me totally change my opinion about the whole band. They took the lifestyle saying sex, drugs and rock'n'roll as their holy script and maybe that‘s why people all around the world admired them so much. I doubt that any band would nowadays get away with what these guys are loved for. They got a chance to live the life they dreamt of as kids and became a significant voice of the entire generation of rock music fans. No wonder the autobiography The Dirt quickly became a bestseller. There have been talks about making it into a movie for a long time now, but according to the most recent information Netflix is being interested in producing it and Jeff Tremaine – known for his popular tv show Jackass - will be taking care of the script. Are you looking forward to see the movie or you prefer reading the published version?
