Deep Purple in Ostrava

7. 11. 2015

Last week we went to have some fun to two totally different shows. The first one was the English hard rock legend Deep Purple, which played in Ostrava. So how was it?

Hoci im to miestami z bední nepríjemne chrčalo.

The gig was launched by the young German band Whiskey Foundation. I have to admit that musically they were a very good alternative to the original supporting act – Rival Sons, who will join the tour a bit later due to the recording of their new album (true pity). Whiskey Foundation’ set caught my attention quite a bit, although some of the songs seemed to blend together…. What entertained me in the meantime was my guessing whether the bass player is a man or woman because I only saw his back most of the time (It was a guy! And he was wearing the coolest looking pyjama trousers ever :D). Later I found out that when the band came to Ostrava, someone stole almost half of their instruments but luckily despite this incident they were able to do the show. Even though there were crackling noises coming out of their amps.

Hard rocková legenda Deep Purple nerobila drahoty a začala hrať presne podľa plánu. Našťastie všetci členovia zázračne ožili pri záverečných skladbách Smoke on the Water, Hush a Black Night.

Well-known legend of hard rock didn’t make a great fuss over it and kicked off the show as per schedule. The predominating newer songs were alternating with their older work and even if I’m not their biggest fan, some tracks which had been unknown to me got right under my skin (for example Vincent Price). The songs were served to the audience one after another without lengthy breaks. Despite the fast pace of the evening I started noticing that the interaction with the audience was quite sporadic. The band members were playing like professionals but I somehow missed the abstract connection between the artist and his fans. Luckily, by the time the show was over, this situation changed when they were playing their biggest hits. The band kept standing more in the back of the stage and the musicians haven’t jumped or walked that much  (considering their age you cannot really expect more, but it reminded me of Ozzy Osbourne (66) who still manages to jump around the stage on his shows). Without the smile on their faces you wouldn’t really tell whether they are truly enjoying the concert or not because they didn’t show it that much. At times I even had the impression (feel free to hate me for it) that they are playing more for themselves than for the audience. Moreover I couldn’t help but notice that the frontman Ian Gillan has been coughing between the songs quite often. Thank God they were saving their energy for the last songs – Smoke on the Water, Hush and Black Night.

Anyway, there were still plenty of beautiful moments during the show. Steve Morse’s guitar solos and Don Airey playing Smetana’s Vltava (or "The Moldau" in German) and Dvořák’s New World Symphony being just some of them. To show its gratitude, the audience has granted the musicians with appreciative applause. I was a bit disappointed that they didn‘t play my favourite Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming, however, I can imagine how difficult it must be to choose from such a rich discography that Deep Purple can boast of. Settling the setlist to please everyone for the shows must be really challenging.
